“Incredible” is a word that come into my mind first while talking about Mt Bromo. And this article will discuss a topic how to hike Mount Bromo In East Java without a tour or guide. And bonus tips how to avoid the entrance fee.
Bromountain.com - Mount Bromo is probably most popular mountain in Indonesia that can attract many tourists. It is 2329 mdpl in height and located in East Java. The 2329 mdpl high volcano is part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.
Most traveler will come to visit Mt Bromo as part of their tour package. And they usually start in Yogyakarta or any of the nearby towns such Surabaya, Malang, or Probolinggo.
If you arrange your holidays with tour agents, it will include everything from transportation using private car or van shared with other travelers to accomodation in Cemoro Lawang (the entrance to Mount Bromo).
The car or van will take you as eateries schedule and will end at the sunrise viewpoint. Some of the tour packages will continue to Kawah Ijen (Ijen Crater) and even continue to Bali.
To visit Mount Bromo, you need bigger efforts and time. And some peoople will choose to go with organized tour packages. It can be a good deal and make the holiday more convenient.
For people with low budget, better to go independently without an organized tour guide. And this is very possible to travel far to Mount Bromo (as well as Ijen Crater)!
In my opinions, choosing train transportation is the most recommended. This transportasion is cheaper, faster, and much more confortable compare to bus. There are two trains depart from Lempuyangan Station (Yogyakarta) to the city of Probolinggo.
If you book them online, you must fill the available form and input your mail address. The system will send a booking code via email. And credit cards payment is acceptable.
Once the payment are done, you can print the tickets directly at the train station. There will be ticket machines and you just need to enter the booking code or scan the barcode you get via email.
At the train station’s main entrance you will find yellow minibusses waiting the passengers. It will charge you only for 5000 IDR actually. Thus, ignore the initially demanded price from the driver and bargain till the actuall price. It is just 10 minutes riding.
From Bayuangga bus terminal you can take minibuses to Cemoro Lawang. The minubuses departs from outsitde the terminal. Thus, you do not need to enter the bus terminal.
The minibuses will go as soon as its full of passengers. In case they are not full, you need serious bargaining skills to make it go to Cemoro Lawang at the same day. Its prices at the normal day is around 35000 IDR per person for the 90 minute drive. The more passengers join, the cheaper it is.
Cemoro Lawang (The Entrance Of Mount Bromo)
Before arrival at the Cemoro Lawang village, you will be charged 15000 IDR entrance fee to enter the highland village.
There are quite a lot of home stays and guest houses here that you can choose. Our first recommendation goes to Cafe Lava Hostel which is a good hostel with low – mid prices.
Better to reserve any accomodation all the way before coming to Cemoro Lawang. The guesthouses and home-stays here are frequently fully booked.
Since the weather can be quite cold in the early morning, make sure to wear a sweatshirt and bring some water. And closed shoes (hiking shoes or light sneakers) is abolutely the best and sufficient choice.
If you want to do photography, try to arrive at the sunrise viewpoint 20 minutes earlier since it will be teeming with travelers.
And here’s the reason you travel far to Mount Bromo and the whole national park. The “normal weekday prices” seems to be 218.000 IDR and 320.000 for the “weekends prices and holidays”.
If you don’t arrange your holidays with an organized tour, there is a tricky way to enter the sea of sand and the national park for free. Starts right next to the Cemara Indah hotel, there is small dirt track frequently used by horseman which leads down to the sea sand. It is obviously 10 – 15 minutes walking down and 30 minutes to touch the stairs of Mount Bromo.
Once you reach the base of Mount Bromo, you have to hike the steps to see the crater rim up close.
